LED Neon Sign Repair: How to Fix 8 Common Problems

par Ari Basmadjian sur Aug 04, 2026

If your LED neon sign has stopped working, the odds are good that the sign itself is fine. In most cases the fault sits in the power adapter, the connector, or the outlet — all of which are cheaper and easier to deal with than the sign. It's worth ruling those out before assuming the worst.

This guide works through the eight problems we see most often, organised by symptom so you can jump straight to what's happening with yours. It also draws a clear line between what's safe to check at home and what genuinely needs a professional.

Key Takeaways

  • Most LED neon faults are power-related, not sign-related — check the adapter and connections first.
  • LED neon runs on low voltage (typically 12–24V), which makes basic checks far safer than with traditional glass neon.
  • Traditional glass neon runs at thousands of volts and should never be worked on at home.
  • Quality LED neon is rated for roughly 30,000+ hours, so a young sign failing usually points to a component fault rather than wear.
  • Always unplug the sign before inspecting anything.

Start Here: Find Your Symptom

Match what your sign is doing to the most likely cause, then jump to that section.

Symptom Most likely cause
Nothing lights up at all Power adapter, outlet, or loose connector
Sign flickers or strobes Loose connection or failing adapter
One section is dark Broken internal connection in that segment
Whole sign is dimmer than before Adapter losing output, or voltage drop
Remote or dimmer won't respond Battery, pairing, or receiver
Adapter buzzes, or is hot to touch Failing adapter — stop using it
Tube is cracked or crushed Physical damage
Colours look wrong on an RGB sign Controller or remote settings

Before You Start: Safety First

Always unplug the sign at the wall before touching any connection. LED neon is low-voltage at the sign end, which is exactly why it's safer to handle than the old glass kind — but the adapter still converts mains electricity, and that part deserves respect.

Two hard rules. First, never open a power adapter or transformer casing; if the adapter is the problem, it gets replaced, not repaired. Second, if you have a traditional glass neon sign rather than LED, stop here. Glass neon operates at thousands of volts and can hold a charge even when unplugged. That is professional-only territory. If you're unsure which type you own, our guide to flex neon vs glass neon explains how to tell them apart.

Why Is My LED Neon Sign Not Turning On?

This is the most common problem and usually the easiest to solve. Work through it in order, because each step rules out a cause:

  1. Test the outlet. Plug something else in. It sounds obvious, but switched outlets and tripped breakers account for a surprising share of "dead" signs.
  2. Check the adapter's indicator. Most adapters have a small LED. No light usually means the adapter has failed.
  3. Reseat every connection. Unplug, then firmly push each connector together. A plug that looks seated can still be a millimetre short of contact.
  4. Inspect the cable. Look for pinches, kinks, or crush damage where furniture or a mount may have caught it.

If the adapter's indicator is dark and the outlet is fine, you've found your fault. A replacement adapter is an inexpensive part — just make sure the replacement matches your sign's voltage and polarity exactly.

Why Is My LED Neon Sign Flickering?

Flickering almost always means an inconsistent electrical connection rather than a dying sign. Start by unplugging and reseating every connector, including the one at the back of the sign itself.

If reseating doesn't fix it, the adapter is the next suspect — they tend to fail gradually, delivering unstable power before stopping entirely. A sign that flickers more as it warms up is a classic sign of an adapter on the way out.

One more thing to check: if the sign shares a circuit with something power-hungry like a heater or compressor, flicker can be caused by voltage dips on the circuit, not by the sign at all.

Why Is Part of My Neon Sign Not Lighting Up?

When one word, letter, or segment goes dark while the rest works, the problem is a broken connection within that section. This is one of the few faults that genuinely isn't a home repair.

LED neon is built as continuous runs of diodes bonded inside a flexible sleeve. Reaching a break means opening that sleeve, which almost always damages more than it fixes. Contact the maker instead — a partial outage on a newer sign is often a manufacturing fault covered under warranty.

Why Is My Sign Dimmer Than It Used To Be?

Gradual dimming across the whole sign usually points to the adapter losing output over time rather than the LEDs themselves wearing out. Quality LED neon is rated for around 30,000 hours, so genuine age-related dimming takes years of daily use to show.

Before replacing anything, check whether a dimmer or remote has simply been left on a lower setting — it's a common and slightly embarrassing culprit. If the sign runs on an extension cord, try it plugged directly into the wall; long or thin cords can cause enough voltage drop to visibly dim a sign.

Why Isn't My Remote or Dimmer Working?

Run through these in order:

  • Replace the battery. Remotes usually take a coin cell, and a weak one shortens range before it stops working entirely.
  • Get closer and aim at the receiver. Most use infrared and need reasonably direct line of sight.
  • Re-pair the remote. Unplug the sign for 30 seconds, plug it back in, then press a button on the remote within the first few seconds.
  • Test without the remote. If the sign works when plugged straight in, the fault is the remote or receiver — not the sign.

On RGB signs, wrong colours are almost always a controller setting rather than a fault. A full power cycle usually restores the default.

What If the Adapter Buzzes or Gets Hot?

Stop using it. Adapters run warm in normal operation, but one that's too hot to hold comfortably, buzzing audibly, smells of burning, or shows any scorching or swelling needs to be taken out of service immediately.

Replace it rather than repairing it, and choose a replacement that matches the original's voltage and current rating and carries proper safety certification. That certification matters more than people expect — our guide to LED neon sign certifications covers what the marks actually mean.

Can a Cracked or Damaged Tube Be Fixed?

Honestly, usually not — at least not invisibly. LED neon's flexible sleeve is bonded around the diodes, so a crush or deep crack tends to break the light path as well as the housing.

There is a real upside compared with glass, though: LED neon fails safely. There's no gas to escape and no shattering, so a damaged sign isn't a hazard the way broken glass tubing would be. If the damage is cosmetic and the sign still lights fully, it's often fine to keep using. If it's structural, replacement is the realistic answer.

What Should You Leave to a Professional?

Four situations are worth handing over rather than attempting:

  • Any traditional glass neon fault — high voltage, professional only, no exceptions.
  • A dark section on an otherwise working LED sign.
  • Anything requiring the sleeve or housing to be opened.
  • Hard-wired or outdoor commercial installations, which usually fall under electrical code and need a qualified installer.

If your sign is still within its warranty period, contact the maker before attempting anything yourself — a DIY attempt can void coverage you'd otherwise be able to claim.

How Do You Prevent Problems in the First Place?

Most faults we see are avoidable. Keep the adapter somewhere ventilated rather than buried behind furniture or coiled under a rug. Plug directly into a wall outlet where you can, and use a surge protector in areas prone to power fluctuations. Support the sign properly at its mounting points so its weight never hangs on the cable or connectors, and route cables where chairs and doors won't catch them.

Routine care helps too — our guide to caring for your LED neon sign covers cleaning and placement, and how durable LED neon signs really are sets realistic expectations for lifespan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I repair an LED neon sign myself?

Often, yes — if the fault is the power adapter, a loose connector, or the remote. Those are low-voltage, low-risk checks. Faults inside the sign's sleeve, such as a dark section, aren't practical to repair at home and are better handled by the maker.

How much does neon sign repair cost?

The most common repair is simply a replacement power adapter, which is an inexpensive part. Faults inside the sign itself are a different matter — if the sign is out of warranty, replacement is often more economical than repair, since the labour involved in opening a sealed sleeve is significant.

Why does my neon sign keep flickering?

Persistent flickering usually means a loose connection or a failing power adapter. Reseat every connector first. If it continues, the adapter is the most likely cause, particularly if the flickering gets worse as the sign warms up.

How long should an LED neon sign last?

Quality LED neon is typically rated for around 30,000+ hours, compared with roughly 10,000 for traditional glass neon. A sign failing well inside that range usually indicates a component fault rather than normal wear — which is often good news, because component faults are the fixable kind.

Is a broken LED neon sign dangerous?

Far less so than broken glass neon. LED neon contains no gas and won't shatter, and it runs at low voltage at the sign end. The exception is the power adapter: if it buzzes, overheats, smells of burning, or shows scorching, unplug it and stop using it.

Good Sign. Good value.

We got a fantastic custom sign. It was a fantastic process dealing with the team to design and get a quote for my sign. The sign turned out fantastic, and the quality of the sign, and the mounting hardware was exactly what I needed. The only “issue” I had was that I wasn’t able to get in touch with the team to see where my sign was in the manufacturing process after I paid. I did get an email once it shipped, and the whole process was quick and straightforward. I strongly recommend this company.

Perfect Gift for our Colleague!

I started by requesting a quote for a design I didn't have in mind, but provided content. Later I was able to update my RFQ with a specific design idea. Neonific prepared a mockup, and it gave me new ideas. After a few font and color changes, Neonific even worked with me on a price to fit the planned budget by appropriately sizing the sign. I didn't realize it would come with a remote, which was a welcomed bonus surprise. The sign was a gift from our team to a colleague. Production and shipping were quick, and it was packaged very well!
